Bali, known as the “Island of the Gods,” is a treasure trove of art, culture, and tradition. One of the most vibrant celebrations of Balinese artistry is the annual Bali Arts Festival, also known as Pesta Kesenian Bali (PKB).
A Celebration of Art and Culture
Held annually, typically starting in the second week of June and running for a month until mid-July, the Bali Arts Festival is Indonesia’s longest-running arts festival. It’s a spectacular showcase of Balinese art forms, including:
- Traditional dance performances like Legong, Kecak, and Barong
- Music and gamelan orchestra
- Drama, including dance drama like Calonarang
- Paintings, sculptures, and other visual arts
- Craftsmanship, such as woodcarving, metalworking, and weaving

- Opening Parade: The festivities kick off with a grand opening parade featuring hundreds of artists from Bali’s eight provinces and neighboring islands, showcasing traditional costumes, music, and dance.
- Daily Performances: The main venue, the Taman Werdhi Budaya Art Centre (Bali Art Center) in Denpasar, comes alive with daily performances by various art groups from all over Bali and Indonesia.
- Art Exhibitions: Throughout the festival, there are exhibitions showcasing traditional and contemporary Balinese art, providing a glimpse into the artistic soul of the island.
